Mirvac has begun detailed design for the planned new supermarket at Orion Springfield Central.

The new supermarket extension will also include a tavern and bottle shop, 40 new specialty stores, extra commercial suites and almost 600 extra car parks.

Ipswich City Council approved the extension in February, clearing the way for the construction of more than 14,057m2 of retail space including a 5,650m2 supermarket.

An estimated 550 jobs will be created during construction, and 600 retail jobs to be filled when the new stores open.

Mirvac’s General Manager – Retail, Susan MacDonald, said Mirvac would look to update the community later in the year, prior to starting construction.

“We are excited by the progress and are working to ensure we achieve the right tenants to make Orion an even more successful and vibrant community centre,” she said.

The supermarket expansion follows the successful leasing of the Circuit at Orion, with Hogs Breath Café, Amart Sports and BCF set to open later in the year, joining the recently opened KFC, Kmart Tyre and Auto, Bridgestone Select and Supercheap Auto.

Orion Springfield Central is already serviced by Woolworths and Big W, and Ms MacDonald said an additional supermarket and specialty stores would add significantly to the centre’s amenity.

Springfield Land Corporation Managing Director Raynuha Sinnathamby said it would be a boon for the fast-growing Greater Springfield community.

“This will transform Orion into a true community hub and help the city meet the entertainment and retail expectations of an expanding population,” Ms Sinnathamby said.
