Streamlined primary health care with Medicare Local

22 September 2011

Australia’s fastest growing region can soon enjoy hassle-free primary health care services when the Western Corridor’s Medicare Local opens its doors in Greater Springfield in October.

The West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local, part of the Australian Government’s national health reform, is a primary health care organisation which will link the community to local GPs, nursing and other health professionals, hospitals and aged care.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann MP said he welcomed the initiative to help drive and strengthen local primary health care services in the Western Corridor.

“The West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local has aptly chosen to open the first Medicare Local office in Greater Springfield, a master-planned city with a 52 hectare Health City precinct,” Mr Neumann said.

“Greater Springfield is the geographical centre of South East Queensland and is in the heart of the country’s fastest growing area so it makes an ideal launching pad for the Medicare Local. Recent real time travel research also shows it only takes 31 mins to get to Springfield from Brisbane CBD.

“The opening of the Medicare Local is great news for the community as it means patients and service providers will find it easier to navigate their way through the health care system.

“People can also expect better access to a wide range of primary health care services.”

Springfield Land Corporation Executive General Manager Health and Education Terry Kearney said the establishment of the Medicare Local in Springfield was in line with the City’s vision to build a community with a healthy lifestyle.

“Health has been a cornerstone of Greater Springfield from day one, which is why we have a precinct solely dedicated to everything from oral health care and GP services to an acute hospital and aged care, as well as independent retirement living units,” Mr Kearney said.

“We are fully supportive of the Medicare Local concept and are excited to add this organisation to our growing list of health care services for the Springfield community.

“The Medicare Local will shift the focus of health care away from hospitals and provide better coordinated primary care in the community. This keeps people healthier, reduces hospital stays and puts the spotlight on improving care for those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes.

“The vision for a healthy Greater Springfield is to plan and support the delivery of whatever services are required to allow our people to live a healthy lifestyle.”

The West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local at Greater Springfield is among the first 19 Medicare Locals to be established across Australia. Sixty Medicare Locals will be established nationwide within the next year.
