Like most people who visit Brookwater for the first time, Alan Burley was pleasantly surprised when he stumbled across the prestigious golf community for the first time. This chance meeting resulted in not just one family moving to Brookwater, but five.
Alan, a Director in the family owned and operated Sun Engineering based in Carole Park, which was founded by Patrick and Patricia McMonagle, Alan's in laws, in 1975. With nearly the whole family working for the company, six McMonagle families happily lived next door to each other in Camira for 20 years; that was until Alan decided to scout around for the best block in Brookwater.
"I decided to come for a walk around Brookwater to find the best block on the golf course. I brought a ute and a ladder. My wife (Alicia) and I climbed up every tree assessing the views, eventually settling on a block that wasn't yet released," Alan said.
Not willing to compromise when searching for the best possible position for his new home, Alan and Alicia left a $1000 deposit with the Brookwater sales team and simply waited for the land to be released for sale. That was about seven or eight years ago now.
"It gave me an opportunity to escape the mother-in-law," Alan jokes.
"In hindsight, I should have bought the whole street, because as it turns out the in-laws ended up buying one of the neighbouring blocks to ours!"
And they weren't the only ones. After regular visits three of the remaining families also relocated to Brookwater, bringing the McMonagle clan's Brookwater population to 21 and spanning three generations. Patrick is also trying to talk his brother Noel into moving from Ireland to Brookwater.
"We just love the golfing lifestyle. I have been a mad golfer all my life, and to live on what I regard as the best course I have ever played is an absolute luxury," Alan said.
Prior to moving to Brookwater, Alicia was not an avid golfer, but in the past six months has taken to the game and enjoys playing at least once a week.
"I come home from work in the summer and Alicia has often got the golf cart ready to go so we can squeeze nine holes in before sunset. It is a beautiful lifestyle to live," Alan said.
While the McMonagle family enjoys the golf course, it isn't the only feature that makes Brookwater a place they love to call home.
"Quite often we will get a call from one of my brothers or sisters inviting us around for dinner after they have picked up some fresh produce at the Gourmet Markets," Alicia said.
With the family business expanding across Asia and into the Middle East, Alan and the family also use the Clubhouse to entertain clients and do business.
"I am very proud to take clients to the Clubhouse for dinner after a round of golf. No matter where they may be from, they always marvel at the facilities," Alan said.
