Meet Mr Garlic
|
 |
|
Between 6am and 12pm on the first and third Sunday of every month, under a canopy of shady trees at the Brookwater Gourmet Markets, you will find Sue and Malcolm Sutton, or, as they are affectionately known by regulars to the South West’s famous fresh markets – Mr and Mrs Garlic.
The husband and wife team from the outskirts of Laidley are well-known for their ability to grow flavoursome garlic and fresh seasonal vegetables that keep customers returning to feast on the smorgasbord of healthy foods they sell from their stall at the Brookwater Gourmet Markets.
While Sue and Malcolm cite garlic as their “number one” product, there is a wide selection of fresh vegetables that are bound to keep families full and healthy as we verge on the edge of winter.
“At the moment we have garlic, beetroot, watermelons, pumpkin and three varieties of potatoes”
“We will run out of garlic for the season in a couple of weeks, so that will be sad, but over winter we will have cauliflower, broccoli, spring onions, shallots and other seasonal veggies grown in the Lockyer Valley,” Mr Sutton said.
After supplying the commercial market with fresh vegetables for 15 years and employing more than 20 people, Mr and Mrs Sutton – ‘the Garlics’ – decided they would retire to Laidley and sell real estate for a living, but it didn’t take them long to realise the ‘city’ life wasn’t for them.
“We moved back to a small ten acre farm with a home looking out towards a 300 foot waterfall. It’s very serene and we find it difficult to tear ourselves away from it,” Mrs Sutton said.
The passion they have for their product shows, and listening to Malcolm talk about his beloved garlic makes you realise there is more to the relative of the onion than you may think.
“The redder the garlic, the stronger the flavour,” Mr Sutton said, reaching for a garlic from his display that would be easily mistaken for a red delicious apple.
“Most of the garlic you find in a supermarket is imported from China, is pure white and lacks flavour. A good chef would use a whole bulb of that sort of product to achieve the kind of flavour we get with just one clove of our garlic,” Mr Sutton said.
While fresh garlic might add a beautiful flavour to your meals, it is also well-known for its medicinal benefits.
“A lot of our repeat customers eat up to a clove every day and come back every fortnight for more; they never get sick, never get a cold”
“Some people walk past and say ‘we love your garlic but haven’t yet run out’!”,
“The Brookwater markets are the ideal place to buy and sell your fresh fruit and veggies because you get a superior product at a better price than the supermarkets,”
”These markets might not be as big and busy as the well-known commercial markets in the city, but the quality is very high,” Mr Sutton said.
The Brookwater Gourmet Markets are held on the first and third Sunday of every month at the Brookwater Golf Club. To find out more about shopping at the markets or selling your produce, please visit brookwater.com.au.
