Chairman of Springfield Land Corporation, Maha Sinnathamby, today announced Ms Rebecca Zafir as the recipient of the 2009 Sinnathamby Scholarship.

Mr Sinnathamby said it was a pleasure to award the scholarship to such a deserving recipient and hoped Ms Zafir enjoyed continued success for the remainder of her law degree at University of Southern Queensland, Springfield.

“I am confident the scholarship will make a positive difference to Rebecca’s university experience and look forward to seeing her continue to achieve great things both inside and outside of the classroom,” Mr Sinnathamby said.

Mr Sinnathamby and Springfield Land Corporation’s Managing Director, Bob Sharpless, established the Sinnathamby Scholarship with USQ in 2007 to improve access to quality education in Greater Springfield.

Each year the scholarship is awarded to a student who has achieved high academic results and contributed to the vibrant campus lifestyle enjoyed at Springfield’s Education City.

Education City is a unique integrated learning community located in the heart of Greater Springfield. The campus brings education, training and learning providers together to the one location to offer multiple lifelong learning opportunities to the local and international community.

Providers already on campus are University of Southern Queensland, Union Institute of Languages, MEGT, The Bremer Institute of TAFE, St. Peters Lutheran College and Australia City College.

Students at Education City enjoy first class facilities, including wireless internet connectivity, childcare providers, cafes, a convenience store, 24/7 security and a 110 bed student residential village.

Ms Zafir currently lives on campus at the student village and works at Orion Springfield Town Centre, only minutes away.

“One could say she lives the ideal Education City lifestyle by living, learning, playing and working in Greater Springfield,” Mr Sinnathamby said.

USQ Springfield campus Director Doug Fraser said the scholarship was a remarkable investment by Springfield Land Corporation in the future of Greater Springfield and USQ.

“The scholarship will be a wonderful head start for Ms Zafir and could be the difference between starting her career with a significant education debt or being financially unencumbered,” he said.

Having achieved outstanding results at high school on the Sunshine Coast, Ms Zafir chose Education City because of the high quality education she could receive at USQ in a supportive environment dedicated to learning where students are more than simply a number.

“The atmosphere and opportunities that come with living and studying at Education City have made it an ideal place to start my university career,” Ms Zafir said.

All USQ Springfield scholarships will be awarded at an official ceremony at USQ, Education City on 10 March from 6.30pm to 8pm.
