Train commuters’ wishes have been granted with 400 extra car park spaces to be built at Springfield Central railway station.
The State Government have committed to funding the new park’n’ride site, bringing the total number of spaces to 500.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the new park ‘n’ ride site solved a looming parking crisis.
“We’ve been able to find the savings within the project budget to deliver additional spaces,” he said.
Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the decision to boost spaces.
“This is a positive outcome for everyone involved and demonstrates the benefits of the state government and council working closely together to find the best possible solution,” Cr Pisasale said.
Springfield City Group also applauded the decision to increase parking.
Chairman Maha Sinnathamby said the Springfield Central railway station will be a boon to residents and visitors to Greater Springfield.
Detailed site planning for the park ‘n’ ride is now underway with construction expected to cost about $7 million.
The car park will be opened as part the $1.2 billion Springfield rail project due for completion late 2013.
