First opened in May 2011, the 24-hectare $30 million parklands have received numerous awards for outstanding urban design. These include a National Award for Excellence from the Urban Development Institute of Australia and becoming the Overall Winner at the Australian International Design Awards within its first year of public access. Greater Springfield has been master-planned with one-third of all land dedicated to open green space making Robelle Domain the natural pristine heart of Springfield Central.

Technology has also played a major role in the design of SEQ’s newest urban parkland. Maha Sinnathamby, Chairman of Springfield City Group said combining technology with nature in shared green space had enhanced the sense of community by encouraging people to meet and interact in a relaxed and healthy way.

“We wanted to create something unique at the heart of Greater Springfield that kids, students and families and residents would be drawn to and that’s where the idea of introducing technology to the park came from,” he said. Robelle Domain’s kids playground features computerised playground equipment to encourage both interactive and active play.

“The play equipment has the ability to allow children to punch in different patterns and sequences into a play experience and then interact with it on that basis.”

Robelle Domain also incorporates artistic light columns enabling light, sound and projection events that can be programmed into infinite sequences and artistic expressions.

“There are seven feature towers, each nine metres in height, which define the central amphitheatre lawn and provide light and sound displays after dark – bringing the park to life by night as well as during the day. The park also boasts free wireless internet access so visitors to the park or students can just wander down from their classes and soak up the beautiful natural setting.” Mr Sinnathamby said.

Together the parklands and Orion Lagoon mark the community hub of Springfield Central, featuring a variety of events and entertainment including outdoor movie screenings, the monthly Springfield markets and a huge range of community events throughout the year! There is always something to do in Greater Springfield’s Robelle Domain, located right in the heart of Springfield Central, close to shopping, transport and the University of Southern Queensland.

Robelle Domain

Better than Southbank? You be the judge. Come and have your best day out
at the Orion Lagoon and enjoy the many spaces and facilities Robelle Domain has to offer.

Robelle Domain is the centrepiece of the Greater Springfield city and was made possible by the financial contribution and strong partnerships developed between Springfield City Group ($5 million and provision of the land), and all three levels of government – Ipswich City Council ($10 million which included a $5 million loan from the state government), the Queensland Government ($5 million) and the Australian Government ($10 million).

Springfield City Group chairman Maha Sinnathamby said the opening was a significant milestone in the development of the master-planned community, recognised as the best in the world by the International Real Estate Federation last year.

“Robelle Domain is the recreational hub of Springfield Central Parklands and will connect Orion Springfield Central, Education City and Parkside business precinct,” he said.

“Our vision is to build a community where people can live, play and work and providing so much green, open space in the heart of the Springfield CBD is an important part of that vision.

In 2015, a 110-metre walkway and footbridge linking Greater Springfield’s CBD to the Robelle Domain Parklands was officially dedicated to the inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi.

“I recently spoke with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is a great proponent of Gandhi’s teachings. Modi has been urging the world to adopt a peaceful approach to negotiations in the spirit of Gandhi and was very pleased that a statue in Brisbane City and a bridge here in Greater Springfield have now been dedicated,” said Maha Sinnathamby, Chairman of Springfield City Group.

Gandhi’s granddaughter Dr Ella Gandhi, herself a world-famous politician and women’s rights activist has also paid a visit to the bridge for the dedication ceremony, thankful to all for revering the great man. The Gandhi Inspiration Bridge will become an annual focus and dedication point over time for also honouring Queenslanders and other individuals who have inspired others to the greater good.
