A beach in Central Springfield is being considered as part of the second stage of development at Robelle Parklands, following the announcement by Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean confirming the Federal Governments $5milliion contribution to the project.
The project includes plans to transform a dry gully behind the parklands’ existing waterfalls into a small river and landscape the river banks to provide a swimming platform.
The Federal Government has committed $5 million towards the project; Ipswich City Council will contribute a further $5 million and will now seeking the same from the state government so they can kick start the project.
Springfield Councillor David Morrison hopes the funding will be enough to construct a South Bank style beach.
“It’s what we’re hoping for but it will depend on the costings of what we can achieve for $15 million,” Cr Morrison said.
When finished, the parkland will contain elements similar to those of Brisbane’s South Bank such as a swimming lagoon and urban water corridors making the parkland a true destination in its own right.
